Success Stories of beneficiaries in Skill Training and Employment of Persons with Disabilities under Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS)

Smt. Dashisha Snaitang received the training on Business Development Plan at Nongstoin Social Service Society-Nongstoin.
She started her small shop in her Village, Mairang with the support of her family.? But due to her disabilities she could not expand her shop to increase her income. Fortunately, with the implementation of the Skill Development & Employment of Persons with Disabilities project, she got the opportunities to attend the training on small businesses to enhance her skill and how to maintain the stocks, items and how to save money.
Currently, Dashisha Snaitang is able to expand her shops and is able to increase the food items and stocks. Now her income from her shop has increased gradually.

Current Status: Self Employed (Grocery Shop)Smt. Teiboksis Syiemlieh received the training on Business Development Plan at Nongstoin Social Service Society-Nongstoin. She has started her small shop in New-Nongstoin. With the help of the Skill Development & Employment of Persons with Disabilities Project, she improved her skills and knowledge to expand her shop and now she is able to increase the food items and stocks. Her business has changed drastically.

Current Status: Self Employed
Pharning Jana, S/o Jrol Jana attended a tailoring course in the year 2012 at Wellspring Social Service Society, Mairang. He showed great interest in learning tailoring and embroidery. Being from a BPL family, he gets Rs.500/- from the Government as pension. He is an active member of the DPO Mawkhap and a member of IFAD. He has obtained disability certificate with 40% of disability (locomotor). Wanting to see to improve his economic stability, the Society selected him for the MSSDS sustainable livelihood project. He came for the refresher course conducted in May- June 2018 at Wellspring Social Service Society, Mairang. His attendance for the class was 100%. After the successful completion of the refresher training, he purchased a Sagar Food Tailoring machine with electric motor and other stitching materials for him.
He gets orders for stitching from the neighbourhood and he earns about Rs.150/- per day. He comes often to the Centre and gives a brief report of his economic empowerment. He is happy and content with his work and is hopeful that through this livelihood program he can bring up his family. He has also availed loan under NHFDC Scheme to expand his business such as grocery shop, poultry, piggery and fishing pond. He has now purchased an auto rickshaw for his mobility.
Name: Dijendro Hajong

Age/Sex: 40/m
Village: karugaon, South West Garo Hills District, Ampati
Father?s name: Mr.Bonjen HajongMr Dijendro Hajong, a person with Locomotor Disability, at the age of 15 was bitten by a snake on one of his toes. He did not go for any treatment and used local medicine. But his wounds did not heal. Later, due to lack of proper treatment, he lost all his left toes and his left leg formed a contracture.
Finally, the CBR team from Bethany Society identified him in the year 2006 and gave him counseling and awareness and suggested him to get treatment at Civil Hospital, Tura as his wounds were not cured. After treatment, his wounds healed but his contracture persisted. After his medical intervention, he was referred to Bethany Society?s Training Center for Skill Training in Cane and Bamboo. After the training, he started making Mora (traditional stools) and started selling them in different local markets like Garoboda Market, Ampati Market and even from his very home. The price of his Mora starts from Rs Rs.150/- to Rs 300/-. He also, started rearing a cow with the help of his wife. His monthly income is Rs.7,000/- to Rs 10,000/-. In 2009, he got married and he supports his family by selling cane and bamboo. He is an active member of AMAPD and active member of SHG.
In pursuance of the project on Skill Development Training Programme for 100 Persons with Disabilities (50 for Khasi and Jaintia Hills and 50 for Garo Hills) under the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society, Shillong which was implemented by Bethany Society, Shillong through the office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Shillong, an inspection has been made to Bethany Society and 8 NGO partners to verify the relevance and veracity of the Programme. The compiled report has been is submitted to the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of Meghalaya.
